Member-only story
This is a memory piece, but allow me to take a moment to honor the lives of all who perished on that awful day, as well as the brave Ground Zero workers, police, and firemen among them.
In the aftermath of 9/11, there were many accounts of people who should have been in the Towers that morning, but for a flip of a switch that put them outside of the event. This is my small tale to put in the pile.
Oftentimes in my working-for-the-man life, the decisions I made were simply my response to circumstances and events. A more fierce, ambitious person would have a broader aim for their career life. As an artist and musician, however, I only sought a way to pay my bills and support myself. My self-determination was in my creative work.
Recently having left a job, my agency called me excited to tell me about an opportunity at the World Trade Center. It was early in 2001. The job description matched my skills in graphics so I scheduled an interview. I was looking forward to this adventure.
Many people don’t have a clue about the enormity of the World Trade Center complex. It has its own zip code: 10048. It took getting used to being in this audacious real estate.
