I took a job locally teaching young adults who were "at risk." I was highly motivated, thought I could help some of these kids find their way. There were always 2-3 who really wanted to learn, but the rest of them were disruptors. My classroom smelled like Woodstock at 8:30AM. I had to have the police come three times because these kids would start throwing violent fits if asked to "open the workbook to page 13." My last police intervention was with a student who was fresh out of jail, arrested for trying to eat an arresting officer's face while on PCP, a highly toxic hallucigen. We are so messed up in this country. I eventually left the school. Never looked back.
