I appear to have passed through your Numbers 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 at one time or another! Fr. Richard Rohr, mystic and writer, nails it, in my opinion, when he says people seek transformation. Few religious practices supply that kind of movement from one understanding to another. I could not stand the rigidity. Most of my friends have left their faith and pay little attention, but just go along as they are. And yet, they teach me all the time how to be more loving and empathetic. My conclusion is religion does not necessarily make us better. But it can help when it's right.
